Lucky Saint Pub

Friday early evening in blistering hot July seemed the perfect time to go the Lucky Saint pub and enjoy a few booze-less bevvies in the sun. Run by the same people behind the alcohol-free beer, Lucky Saint is a traditional Georgian pub renovated in sleek oak with beautiful hanging baskets. There is a definite vibe. Staff are super friendly and the place was buzzing with people looking to unwind after a working week. There are plenty of AF options, and the small plates and bar snacks are a chef's kiss (oysters, anchovies with tomato on toast, pork pies and - of course - pork crackling). The Lucky Saint theme runs throughout - ladybird motif mirror, toilets signposted as the 'confessional', branded cork beermats - and as you'd expect, said lager was on draft, so it seemed the obvious start.

The alcohol-free menu offers wine, beers and mocktails. A Maryelobone Sour #2 (Botivo, Three Spirit Livener, Nougthy and aqua faba) promised to be a bit of me but apparently they didn't have everything to make it. The person serving me was obviously new, and the more experienced bartender he consulted was churning out drinks to punters at breakneck speed. I wanted to try something different so had a Pathfinder and soda, which was refreshing and lightly spiced - reminiscent of rum punches I had in Barbados (minus the Mount Gay). Mr Sober AF had an alcohol-free Pentire Coastal spritz - not dissimilar to an Aperol - but it was weak tasting and sadly not a patch on the ready made version.

All in, it was a nice place to kill time before going elsewhere for dinner but I'm not sure if I will make the excursion after work again. I was expecting a little more from a pub affiliated with an alcohol-free brand. The AF choice was decent but the person serving me - as lovely as he was - just didn't know enough. I get the impression that most trade at Lucky Saint is like any other pub, so you'll probably get the best experience as a sober person when it's less busy. Definitely on the list to revisit, if just to get an elusive Marylebone Sour #2 with plenty of mouthwatering morsels on the side.
